When you think of your surroundings and how you carry yourself throughout your day, do you feel safe? Is this perceived safety due to a familiarity with your surroundings; does it have to do with a lack of awareness? Or do you possess the essentials of self defense that keep you truly safe in almost any setting?

Being well versed in self defense, or even trained in something like combat self defense doesn’t magically mean that you are safe. Clearly, danger and violence can appear anywhere. All you have to do is turn on the news to hear that. In one city alone last week there was an attempted abduction of a girl on her way to school and a rape that occurred in the middle of the morning as a woman slept on her couch. Both of these victims may have had a perception of safety because of their familiarity with their surroundings. And yet the safety that they felt was there was a vision; a perception.

Standard martial arts vs Combat Self defense

When you really want to be safe, you have to take matters into your own hands. The first step to do this is to acknowledge that violence can happen anywhere at anytime. Taking this step is a positive one; it is not full of doom and gloom to understand and acknowledge that violence is a reality in life. If you don’t pay attention to it by knowing it is present, then it has a chance to sneak up on you.

Once you acknowledge that crime happens and violence occurs, you are prepared to train yourself in how to handle it if you ever come face to face with a bad guy. You can do this by finding a good combat self defense course. Even though there are likely countless martial arts studios near to your home or work, there is a difference between standard martial arts schools and learning combat self defense.

Be prepared for combat

The difference may be one that some people don’t like. Some have said that combat self defense is just too brutal and they prefer the sport training that they get from martial arts like Tai Kwondo. While learning any type of martial art has its benefits; when what you need is a true and lasting way to protect yourself in any situation – and this is what you need – then you learn what combat self defense has to teach. Why? Because if you are leaving the store at night and a bad guy wants your purse (or worse), he is not going to wait for a bell to ring and a ref to appear to score your bout with him. No, a bad guy is not waiting for anything and is not playing by any rules. These are things you learn when you engage in combat self defense. Crime is combat; and you need to be prepared.

Thia ia something we have to remember when we are training.

There is a bell to ring but in the real world there is no bell.

I've always thought that the distinction you make between combat self defense and general or sports oriented martial arts is a very important one to make. I've met so many black belts in my life who I'm sure would get their ass kicked by most street fighting thugs.

a Great article. As you say, all training is good but a good self defense school should incorporate combat related skills. Introducing some stress. maybe surprise attacks and developing a good mind set. Developing awareness skills, willingness skills, creating boundries with the resolve to enforce them etc.

On the street, an attacker will not stand in front of you, grab you just so and wait for your counter.

Good article voted up and useful. You are right, criminals always attack when they have the greater chances to win.
