Fear sells and marketing people know how to reduce rational people to quivering wrecks, begging for instructions to prevent them from being the next victim of street violence. That crime figures have gone up is no lie, but there are individuals who shamelessly cash in on the epidemic of fear by releasing videos they claim will make you proficient in combat self defense. You will be met with the usual sales talk: how you need to keep you and your family safe, how this program will make you a fighting machine in weeks etc. While it is vital to keep you and your loved ones safe, you have to be wary when looking to invest in a self defense video.

Overcoming Fear

Don't Go by False Claims

Too many instructors claim that they have credentials that they simply don’t possess. Virtually every video released it seems features someone who is a ‘grandmaster’ or ‘guru’ when they are nothing of the sort. They also claim to have thousands of satisfied customers and state that they served time in the military. Thankfully, their deception can be uncovered in most cases by a simple Google search. This will usually reveal a series of links to forums where people who actually bought the self defense video will discuss its merits. By reading these, you can ascertain whether the person responsible for the video is actually a Green Beret, or someone who served in the military … as a cook!

Choose the Right Videos

You should also be looking for videos on combat self defense that offer an improvement in your skill level that is actually feasible. If they claim that their product has the ability to transform you into an MMA standard fighter within a few weeks then you know it is a load of garbage. Go and ask someone who has actually done the hard yards with regards to combat training how long it took them to get to a high level. The answer will always be a few years. You need to get a video that can show you a few basic moves to tide you over for the first few months while gradually building up all other aspects of self defense. Quick fix videos sell because there are so many people out there who are too lazy to train for any great period of time.

Analyse Your Strengths First

Also, you need to bear in mind that there are videos that will not work for you due to your physique. What you need is a self defense video that is geared towards your strengths. For example, a small 100 pound woman should not be purchasing products that show moves which require serious amounts of brute strength to perform. Likewise, someone who is rather unfit is not going to benefit immediately from techniques that require stamina.

A Range of Choices

No matter what your goals are, there is likely to be a combat self defense video out there for you. It is important however to do thorough research on the credentials of the teacher, the validity of the claims and how the product will help you before you take the plunge and invest time and money into it.
